Sony Visa cardholders across the United States must redeem their accumulated points online before December 31, 2024, to prevent their hard-earned Sony Rewards from expiring permanently as the tech giant transitions to a new PlayStation-focused program.
The legacy Sony Rewards program is officially winding down, but this is not the end of the road for credit card rewards. Sony is preparing to transition existing cardholders into the revamped PlayStation Credit Card Rewards program. If you currently hold a Sony Visa® Credit Card* or have been considering applying for one, expect a completely new reward structure starting January 1, 2025.
Important Deadlines: How and When to Redeem Your Points
Earning points on the standard Sony Visa card already concluded on June 20, 2024. The absolute final day to redeem any outstanding points remaining in your account is December 31, 2024. Following this deadline, Sony will permanently shut down both the Sony Rewards mobile application and its official website.
Any points left unredeemed after the cutoff date will be forfeited entirely. Sony will not issue cash refunds or checks for unused balances. To claim your rewards, you must select items directly from the official Sony catalog. For accounts short on points to claim a specific item, Sony offers the option to purchase additional points at a rate of 1 cent per point.
Meanwhile, the PlayStation® Visa® Credit Card* will continue to accumulate rewards through December 31, 2024. Cardholders can expect to receive official communication regarding the details of the incoming rewards program ahead of the transition.
Should You Keep or Cancel Your Sony Visa Card?
If the upcoming rewards structure does not align with your spending habits, canceling the card might seem like a logical step. However, making this decision requires careful consideration of its financial implications.
Because the card carries no annual fee, closing the account could inadvertently lower your credit score. Your credit card limit plays a significant role in determining your overall available credit, which directly influences your credit utilization ratio. Shutting down an active line of credit reduces your total limit, potentially raising your utilization rate and negatively affecting your credit profile.
Maintaining the account without active spending may be the safer financial strategy. With the recent launch of the PlayStation 5 Pro, retaining a card tied to Sony and PlayStation ecosystems could offer distinct advantages. The upgraded mid-generation console features a significantly boosted GPU and advanced AI-driven upscaling, making gaming-focused rewards highly valuable for active players.
