The US House of Representatives has voted to overturn a proposed $5 cap on bank overdraft fees in Washington, clearing the way for President Donald Trump to sign the measure into law and dismantle key consumer protections.

Trump Administration Targets Consumer Watchdog Regulations

This legislative roll-back aligns with the Trump administration’s broader strategy to dismantle regulations introduced under the Biden presidency. The targeted rules were originally established by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), a federal consumer watchdog that has now been largely stripped of its authority.

The Financial Impact of Overdraft Fee Caps

Overdraft fees are charges imposed by financial institutions when a customer’s account balance falls below zero. The CFPB finalised the $5 limit in December, projecting that the restriction would protect household budgets by saving consumers up to $5 billion in annual overdraft fees.

How to Avoid Paying Overdraft Charges

With the federal cap blocked, there remains no legal ceiling on the amount banks can charge for overdrafts. However, consumers looking to avoid these penalties can still compare providers, as several financial institutions offer accounts that do not charge overdraft fees.
