An independent developer has launched Filtr, a revolutionary device-level privacy tool designed to block intrusive advertisements across almost all iPhone, iPad, and Mac applications worldwide, leveraging Apple’s newly introduced URL filtering technology in iOS 26 and macOS 26.
While standard ad blockers are highly recommended by security experts and the FBI to defend against online threats, they historically do very little to stop pervasive tracking inside native mobile apps. This new utility changes that dynamic by moving protection out of the browser and directly into the operating system.
The Evolution of In-App Privacy Protection
Filtr is developed and maintained by Kaylee Serena Calderolla, the creator behind the popular Safari browser ad blocker Wipr. Whilst Wipr excels at preventing ads and tracking scripts from loading within Safari to deliver a cleaner browsing experience, Filtr takes this functionality a step further by targeting ads embedded directly inside iOS and macOS applications.
To achieve this, the tool utilises a powerful network-level feature built into Apple’s latest software updates called URL filters. This API allows developers to restrict access to specific tracking and advertising domains across the entire operating system, rather than restricting the blocklist to a single web browser.

A Seamless User Experience Without Privacy Trade-offs
For users who rely on network-wide solutions like Pi-hole at home, mobile data connections often leave devices vulnerable to aggressive in-app advertising and tracking. Filtr addresses this vulnerability directly. Crucially, as detailed in Calderolla’s privacy policy, the application does not collect or require access to any personal data to function, aligning perfectly with Apple’s strict privacy architecture.
Setting up the utility is incredibly straightforward. After activating the URL filter via an annual subscription, the impact on device clutter is immediate. Advertisements vanish from native applications, occasionally leaving clean, greyed-out placeholder boxes where the promotional content would have otherwise loaded.

Overcoming Apple’s Development Hurdles
According to Calderolla, Filtr is currently the only application leveraging Apple’s URL filters API, largely due to the immense technical hurdles encountered during development. In a detailed May blog post, she described the implementation process as exceptionally difficult, noting that Apple’s documentation on the feature was sparse, requiring extensive trial and error to master.
How the Filtering Engine Protects Your Data
The system operates using a local “pre-filter” blocklist stored on the user’s device, which is silently updated via the Wipr application. If a connection request matches a known safe domain, the page loads instantly. However, if a potential match is detected, the device queries Calderolla’s servers to confirm. To ensure complete anonymity, these queries are routed through Apple’s proxy servers, preventing any external parties—including the developer—from tracking user activity.
Understanding the Limitations and Pricing
While highly effective, no ad-blocking solution is entirely flawless. Filtr cannot easily block advertisements served directly from a platform’s first-party servers, such as those found inside native Facebook, Google, or Reddit apps, as blocking these domains entirely would break the apps’ core functionality. However, because the system filters specific web addresses rather than whole domains, some of these ads may still be caught. For a completely ad-free experience on these platforms, testing reveals that accessing their mobile websites via Safari remains the most reliable workaround.
In terms of cost, Wipr is available as a universal application for a one-off purchase of $5 on the Apple App Store. Accessing the advanced Filtr feature requires an additional in-app purchase of $5 per year, or a one-time lifetime payment of $25.
