Financial consumers across the United States are increasingly turning to specialized credit cards like Bilt and Mesa to earn valuable reward points on their largest monthly expenses—rent and mortgage payments—transforming traditional debt into travel and cashback perks.

A few months ago, Connecticut-based financial therapist LaQueshia Clemons and her husband sought to maximize their credit card rewards. Their search led them to the Bilt Mastercard*, a unique financial tool designed specifically to yield points on rental payments.

According to a recent letter to members published on its website, Bilt plans to expand its rewards program to include mortgage payments later this year. This move aligns Bilt with competitors like the newly launched Mesa Homeowners Visa® Signature Preferred Credit Card*, which already allows property owners to accumulate points on their home loans.

Clemons, who practices at Freedom Life Therapy, now channels her monthly rent, utility bills, cell phone service, auto insurance, and digital subscriptions through her Bilt card. By routing approximately $2,500 in monthly expenses through the card, she and her husband secure a substantial stream of reward points.

Because housing costs represent the single largest expense for the majority of American households, leveraging a credit card for these substantial, recurring payments is an appealing strategy. However, determining whether a housing-focused credit card is financially sound requires weighing the benefits against potential risks.

Should You Charge Your Housing Costs to a Credit Card?

Paying for housing with credit can be highly advantageous, though the utility of this strategy depends entirely on your personal budget and financial discipline. If you are facing financial instability due to job loss or medical debt, putting housing costs on a credit card risks compounding your debt with high-interest charges.

Conversely, for those who can pay off their statement balance in full every month, housing credit cards offer an efficient way to accumulate travel and retail rewards.

Clemons avoids interest charges entirely by paying her balance on a weekly basis, allocating a portion of each paycheck directly to her credit card. This disciplined approach allows her to harvest points without incurring high annual percentage rates (APRs) or late fees.

“I can build up enough points to take the money off my rent payment,” Clemons said. While the monthly savings may seem modest, she notes that the extra cash easily covers daily conveniences like her morning coffee.

Beau Wirick, a 38-year-old wealth adviser at Morton Wealth in California, has relied on the Bilt card for his rent payments over the past several years.

“Getting points for rent is a game changer, so I recommend the Bilt card for that purpose,” Wirick stated. He notes that transferring Bilt points directly to airline and hotel partners yields the highest redemption value for travel bookings, including flights, car rentals, and lodging.

The Hidden Risks of Housing-Focused Credit Cards

The primary risk of paying for housing with a credit card is the potential for rapid debt accumulation if you cannot clear the balance each billing cycle. For many consumers, traditional payment methods—such as bank ACH transfers, paper checks, or money orders—remain a safer alternative.

Additionally, cardholders must account for potential processing fees. While neither the Bilt nor Mesa cards charge annual fees—and Bilt waives transaction fees for rent payments—individual landlords or property management companies may still impose their own credit card processing fees.

To bypass potential landlord fees, Bilt offers a feature called BiltProtect. This setting pulls funds directly from a linked checking account to cover the rent payment while still awarding the associated points, ensuring cardholders do not deplete their available credit line. Without this feature enabled, rent is charged directly against the card’s standard credit limit.

Eligibility and Usage Requirements

Housing-specific credit cards carry standard credit card eligibility criteria. To qualify for the Bilt Mastercard, applicants must be at least 18 years old and reside within the United States or its territories. While there is no official minimum credit score, applicants generally need a good-to-excellent credit profile (ranging from 670 to 850) for approval.

Cardholders must also complete at least five transactions per billing cycle to earn points on their rent payments. Setting the card as the default payment method for recurring expenses like streaming services or utilities is an easy way to meet this monthly requirement.

For the Mesa card, prospective users can join a waitlist via the iOS App Store or Google Play Store. Once invited to apply, applicants undergo a standard credit evaluation process identical to other unsecured consumer credit cards.

Comparing Bilt vs. Mesa Rewards Programs

Bilt Mastercard

The Bilt card awards 1x points per dollar on rent payments, capped at 100,000 points per calendar year, provided the card is used at least five times per billing cycle. Cardholders earn accelerated points on dining and travel purchases, alongside exclusive perks at partner restaurants, fitness brands, and rideshare services.

Points can be transferred directly to airline and hotel partners or redeemed through Bilt’s travel portal for enhanced value.

Beyond traditional credit-building through on-time payments, Bilt offers a rent-reporting feature. This service submits your on-time rent history to the three major credit bureaus, which can actively boost your score over time.

Mesa Homeowners Visa Signature Preferred Credit Card

Currently operating on an invite-only waitlist model, the Mesa Visa card offers a tiered rewards structure tailored specifically to homeowners:

  • 1x points per dollar on monthly mortgage payments.
  • 2x points on everyday essentials, including groceries and gas.
  • 3x points on home-related expenses, such as utilities, repairs, decor, and renovations.
  • 1x points on all other standard purchases.

Mesa cardholders also receive lifestyle perks, including Sam’s Club memberships and statement credits with home-focused partners like Thumbtack and Wag!. Earned points can be redeemed for statement credits, gift cards, travel bookings, or directly against future mortgage payments.

Security Features and Fraud Protection

Routing major financial transactions through a credit card requires robust security measures to protect sensitive banking data.

Both Bilt and Mesa feature standard zero-liability protection to safeguard users against unauthorized or fraudulent transactions. Because Bilt is issued in partnership with Wells Fargo, cardholders receive 24/7 identity theft protection services.

“You’ll want to make sure they have safeguards in place for transmitting your payment information to your landlord, property manager or mortgage company,” advised Jovan Johnson, CFP and co-founder of Piece of Wealth Planning. “Look for other card features like fraud alerts or virtual card numbers, which can add an extra layer of protection.”

Are Housing Credit Cards Worth the Risk?

Every rewards card carries distinct terms, making thorough research essential before submitting an application. Bilt offers an established platform with plans for expansion, while Mesa remains a newer, more exclusive option with specific geographic and platform limitations.

Financial planners emphasize that these cards should only be utilized by consumers who consistently pay off their balances in full. Carrying a monthly balance subjects the user to high interest rates that quickly eclipse the monetary value of any earned rewards.

“Credit card programs are designed to incentivize you to spend more money, period,” Wirick noted. “As long as you can keep yourself from falling into bad habits, go for it.”
