On Thursday, entertainment giant Disney announced a historic partnership with OpenAI, investing $1 billion to legally bring over 200 iconic characters from Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars to ChatGPT and Sora, allowing users to safely generate AI content without copyright risks.

This massive equity investment establishes a powerful alliance between the world’s leading entertainment brand and the dominant force in artificial intelligence. By securing this deal, Disney aims to transform how audiences interact with its intellectual property while maintaining strict control over its digital assets.

The Double-Edged Sword: Funding OpenAI While Targeting Google

While Disney is embracing OpenAI, it is taking a highly aggressive stance against other tech companies. Just one day before announcing the OpenAI alliance, Disney hit Google with a cease-and-desist letter on Wednesday. The media conglomerate alleges that Google’s latest AI models, including “nano banana pro,” are infringing upon Disney’s copyrighted works on a massive scale.

This contrasting strategy highlights how major intellectual property owners are navigating the AI revolution: forming lucrative partnerships with selected developers while aggressively litigating against unauthorized use. Currently, Disney is also suing Midjourney AI, labeling the platform a “bottomless pit of plagiarism” for generating unauthorized, ultra-realistic replicas of its protected characters.

How to Use Sora 2 by OpenAI: A Step-by-Step Guide

Inside the Multi-Year Sora Licensing Deal

Sora, OpenAI’s highly popular video-generation application, became an overnight sensation following its September launch, rapidly climbing to the top of both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Under the terms of the new three-year agreement, Sora users will gain official access to Disney’s vast library of characters starting in early 2026.

The deal permits the generation of AI video clips featuring Disney princesses, Marvel superheroes, and Star Wars icons. Additionally, the agreement covers digital environments—such as the vibrant world of Encanto—alongside official costumes, props, and vehicles.

Key Limitations on Likeness and Voices

Despite the broad scope of the partnership, Disney is enforcing strict boundaries. The licensing agreement excludes talent likenesses and voices. This means users can generate a video of Rocket Raccoon, but they cannot replicate Bradley Cooper’s voice or use the likenesses of real-life actors from Disney’s live-action catalog.

Deepening Integration: Disney Plus and Enterprise Tools

Beyond consumer-facing AI generation, the $1 billion investment positions Disney as a primary enterprise customer for OpenAI. Disney plans to equip its workforce with ChatGPT and utilize OpenAI’s APIs to design proprietary tools, products, and experiences.

This integration will also extend directly to consumers through Disney Plus. The company confirmed that streaming subscribers will soon be able to view curated Sora-generated AI videos directly within the Disney Plus application, though specific details regarding other internal use cases have not yet been disclosed.

Addressing Deepfakes and Ethical AI Development

Sora’s rapid rise has fueled intense debate regarding the proliferation of realistic deepfakes. Notable public figures, the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA, actor Bryan Cranston, and the estate of Martin Luther King Jr. have previously raised serious concerns with OpenAI regarding the unauthorized replication of human identities.

To mitigate these risks, both Disney and OpenAI have committed to establishing stringent safety protocols. The companies stated they will maintain robust controls to block the generation of harmful, misleading, or illegal content using Disney’s intellectual property.

“The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence marks an important moment for our industry,” said Disney CEO Bob Iger. “Through this collaboration with OpenAI, we will thoughtfully and responsibly extend the reach of our storytelling through generative AI, while respecting and protecting creators and their works.”
