Messaging giant Discord rolled out automatic end-to-end encryption for all voice and video calls globally on Monday, ensuring total privacy for its hundreds of millions of users by preventing anyone—including the platform itself—from listening in.
A Major Victory for User Privacy
This deployment represents a significant privacy milestone for Discord’s massive user base, particularly as other tech giants scale back their security commitments. The update comes shortly after Meta pulled the plug on Instagram’s end-to-end encrypted messaging feature earlier this year. Similarly, TikTok confirmed it would not implement end-to-end encryption for user messages following its transition to a US-backed entity.
Seamless Security with No Opt-In Required
Initially introduced earlier in 2024, the security feature is now active for the entire Discord community, requiring no manual setup or configuration changes from users.
“End-to-end Encryption is now standard for every voice and video call on Discord, outside of stage channels. No opt-in required,” confirmed Mark Smith, Discord’s vice president of core technologies, in an official blog post.
