US beverage giant Coca-Cola has indefinitely suspended production at its major dairy subsidiary, Fairlife, across the United States following a disruptive ransomware attack, according to a recent regulatory filing.
US Operations Halted, Canada Unaffected
The multinational conglomerate confirmed the breach in a disclosure filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The document reveals that Fairlife’s production systems were severely compromised by ransomware, forcing an immediate and “temporarily suspended” status for its American manufacturing facilities. However, Coca-Cola noted that Fairlife’s operations in Canada remain completely unaffected by the cyberattack.
A Multi-Billion-Dollar Dairy Powerhouse
As one of the world’s largest consumer goods companies, Coca-Cola’s portfolio spans carbonated soft drinks, bottled water, and dairy products. Fairlife stands out as one of its most lucrative brands, projected to reach an estimated $4 billion in sales by 2024. The shutdown represents a significant operational bottleneck for the beverage giant’s high-growth dairy division.
The Growing Ransomware Threat to Food Supply Chains
Cyberattacks targeting the food and beverage industry often trigger severe, long-lasting consequences for supply chains. Similar ransomware incidents, such as the 2019 attack on Arizona Beverages and the breach at food distribution giant UNFI last year, caused weeks of operational downtime and resulted in empty supermarket shelves. At this stage, Coca-Cola has not provided a timeline for when Fairlife’s systems will be fully restored.
