Indian electronics and semiconductor manufacturer Tata Electronics, a critical global supplier to tech giants Apple and Tesla, has confirmed it fell victim to a major data breach after more than 630GB of proprietary files were leaked on a cybercrime forum.
Exposed Files Detail Apple and Tesla Secrets
The security incident came to light after a hacker forum listing claimed to host over 204,300 stolen files belonging to the manufacturer. A preliminary analysis of the leaked data indicates the presence of highly sensitive Apple supplier specifications and Tesla manufacturing blueprints. While the complete authenticity and integrity of the dataset cannot be independently verified, cybersecurity researchers have identified substantial internal corporate data within the dump.
According to cybersecurity specialist Rajshekhar Rajaharia, the exposed database includes internal Outlook email correspondences, SAP enterprise resource planning data, and various technical documents directly linked to Tata Electronics’ key clients, including Tesla and Apple.
Tata Minimises Operational Impact Amid Ransom Demands
A spokesperson for Tata Electronics confirmed the breach, stating that the company detected a cybersecurity incident on its systems several weeks ago and immediately implemented its incident response protocols. The representative emphasised that the breach has had no impact on business operations, which continue to run normally.
However, the manufacturer declined to provide specific details regarding the exact nature of the compromised data, the number of affected clients or employees, or whether partners like Apple and Tesla had been formally notified of the exposure.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that Tata Electronics recently briefed workers at its iPhone assembly operations regarding the security breach. The report also indicated that Apple is actively investigating the situation and that the threat actors have issued a ransom demand to Tata Electronics.
The Expanding Footprint of India’s Tech Giant
Founded in 2020, Tata Electronics has become a cornerstone of India’s strategy to establish itself as a global semiconductor and electronics manufacturing hub. The company operates multiple high-tech facilities across India and employs more than 75,000 people, according to its parent conglomerate’s figures. As global technology brands actively diversify their supply chains outside of China, Tata has secured pivotal manufacturing partnerships with industry leaders such as Apple, ASML, Intel, Qualcomm, and Tesla.
The cyberattack occurs at a time of rapid expansion for Tata Group within the global tech supply chain. The conglomerate entered the iPhone assembly market in 2023 by acquiring the Indian operations of Taiwanese manufacturer Wistron, subsequently expanding its production capacity by purchasing a 60% majority stake in Pegatron’s Indian unit.
In addition, Tata Electronics secured a strategic semiconductor supply deal with Tesla in 2024, highlighting its growing role as a critical component supplier. Neither Apple nor Tesla has responded to requests for comment regarding the breach.
