Apple is set to alter its iCloud+ “Hide My Email” privacy feature in the coming weeks, a move that will allow websites and apps to easily identify and block anonymous sign-ups by shifting private addresses to a new dedicated domain.
How the iCloud+ Privacy Feature Works Currently
Currently, Apple’s Hide My Email service allows paying iCloud+ subscribers to generate anonymous email addresses using the standard @icloud.com domain. These alias addresses seamlessly forward incoming messages to the user’s actual inbox. The strength of this system relies on the fact that these masked addresses are indistinguishable from regular Apple email accounts, preventing third-party platforms from filtering them out.
The Shift to @private.icloud.com
This stealth approach is about to change. Apple announced in a note to developers on Monday that future anonymously generated addresses will transition to the @private.icloud.com domain. This modification makes it incredibly straightforward for platforms to detect when a user is attempting to sign up anonymously, potentially leading to widespread blocks on these accounts.
According to Apple’s developer communication, previously created addresses will remain fully functional and will continue to forward emails without disruption. However, the tech giant noted that application developers and email service providers must update their filtering systems to ensure that messages sent to users relying on this feature are not blocked.
Backlash From Apple Users
The announcement has sparked concern among privacy-conscious consumers. Several Apple users on Reddit criticised the change to the email domain, arguing that the update defeats the purpose of the tool and makes navigating online services more difficult. Apple has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the rationale behind this decision.
Privacy Concerns and Government Pressure
This policy adjustment follows recent scrutiny over Apple’s handling of user anonymity. Earlier this year, reports revealed that Apple disclosed the real identity of a user who had used Hide My Email to send an allegedly threatening message to the partner of FBI Director Kash Patel.
Furthermore, the Trump administration has actively sought to unmask anonymous online accounts, targeting critics through the use of subpoenas to compel technology companies to hand over identifying user data.
