Amazon Web Services (AWS) is working to resolve a critical billing portal glitch that left global cloud computing customers facing erroneous bills of up to billions of dollars on Friday morning.
AWS Billing Subsystem Failure Triggers Panic
The tech giant confirmed it is actively addressing a bug within its AWS billing computation subsystem. The error caused the online portal to display astronomical, incorrect charges for services that clients had never actually utilised.
According to an update on the AWS status page, Amazon first detected the inaccurate data late on Thursday. Although the company attempted to mitigate the issue, it later conceded on Friday morning that the “rollback of a recent change did not resolve the issue.”
No Real Charges Incurred, Amazon Confirms
For businesses fearing financial ruin, the retail and cloud giant offered reassurance. Amazon stated that these highly inflated estimates “do not reflect actual usage and charges,” meaning affected users will not have to pay the incorrect sums.
The scale of the glitch became apparent as panicked users shared screenshots of their accounts. On online forums, Amazon customers on Reddit documented the errors. One user reported an estimated monthly bill of nearly $2.5 billion, whilst others showed alerts ranging from several million to hundreds of millions of dollars.
Unanswered Questions Over Account Suspensions
When contacted for clarification, Amazon spokesperson Aisha Johnson directed enquiries back to the official status page, declining to provide further details on the root cause of the bug. Crucially, the company has not yet confirmed whether any AWS accounts were automatically suspended or paused by automated systems due to the apparent unpaid multi-billion-dollar balances.
Amazon’s status dashboard indicated that the resolution process was expected to take several more hours to complete.
