This week from Thursday to Saturday, top digital content creators and thousands of fans are gathering at the Anaheim Convention Center in California for VidCon 2026 to navigate the rapid expansion of the multibillion-dollar creator economy and address the rising challenges of artificial intelligence.

Over the last several years, the creator economy has matured into a financial powerhouse. This global summit unites vloggers, gamers, influencers, and media executives across an expanding digital ecosystem, bridging major platforms like YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, and Discord.

The Rise of the Multibillion-Dollar Creator Industry

This year, the boundary between internet fame and mainstream entertainment has dissolved further. Online creators are successfully transitioning to traditional media, highlighted by cinematic projects like Kane Parsons’ Backrooms and Curry Barker’s Obsession. Meanwhile, digital-first shows like Hot Ones—which evolved from a low-budget YouTube concept into a cultural juggernaut spanning 30 seasons—have forced late-night television hosts to question the viability of traditional celebrity interview formats.

However, as the attention economy shifts from a few centralized megastars to a vast network of independent brands, creators face unprecedented challenges. Chief among these is the rapid rise of generative artificial intelligence. Flagship industry events like VidCon serve a dual purpose: celebrating creative achievements while equipping influencers with tactical strategies to protect their likenesses and stand out in an AI-dominated market.

Launched in 2010 by YouTube veterans John and Hank Green of Vlogbrothers, VidCon started as a grassroots community meetup. Today, it is a massive industry convention drawing between 50,000 and 75,000 attendees annually.

Crystal Bell, Mashable’s digital culture editor who is covering the event, points out that the convention’s focus has fundamentally shifted over the years. (CNET and Mashable operate under the same parent company, Ziff Davis.)

“What began as a fan-focused gathering centered on YouTube creators has grown into a much broader creator economy event, with dedicated tracks and programming for fans, creators, brands, marketers, executives and other industry professionals,” Bell noted.

Bell emphasizes that VidCon’s programming now reflects the “coming-of-age story” of the creator economy. The narrative has transitioned from basic content generation to scaling sustainable, creative-led enterprises.

Three Specialized Tracks for Attendees

To accommodate its diverse audience, VidCon organizes its programming into three distinct tracks:

  • The Fan Track: Tailored for community building, featuring interactive brand activations, performances, and in-person meetups.
  • The Creator Track: Designed for mid-tier and aspiring influencers focusing on networking, platform strategy, and production workshops.
  • The Industry Track: Reserved for media executives, brand marketers, and platform representatives analyzing monetization and market trends.

The 2026 Hall of Fame induction ceremony begins Thursday at 6 p.m. PT, honoring digital pioneers such as filmmaker Markiplier, news commentator Philip DeFranco, beauty mogul Michelle Phan, and Blogilates founder Cassey Ho.

The event schedule features highly anticipated fan meet-and-greets, including appearances by viral viral personality Nick Kosir (the dancing weatherman) and the recently unmasked Minecraft creator aCookieGod. Several featured speakers are also highlighted in The Mashable 101, an annual compilation of industry-defining creators.

Media professionals from the CNET Group—encompassing CNET, Mashable, PCMag, and ZDNET—are also onsite. Tara Brown, CNET’s marketing manager, noted that the convention serves as a critical networking hub for digital media professionals.

Highlighting Trust and Expertise in the Era of AI

Lindsey Turrentine, executive vice president of content for CNET Group, will lead a panel on Friday afternoon titled The Trust Gap: Why Expertise Wins in the Age of Infinite Content. The panel features industry experts including Karl Stewart (SVP of marketing at IGN Entertainment), Jennifer Kiffer (senior director of marketplace strategy and insights at CNET Group), and Nick Wolny (managing editor of branded content at CNET Group).

The discussion will focus on how human creators can remain competitive as generative AI floods platforms with synthetic content. Panelists will explore why long-term monetization and audience trust rely on verifiable expertise rather than manufactured authenticity.

“The key for human creators is to lean into the human part, but always with expert knowledge and firsthand experience,” Turrentine said. “Journalists, scientists, chefs and anyone who studies hard has the raw materials. Be yourself, know your stuff. It has to be both.”

On Saturday at 10:30 a.m. PT, Mashable will host a specialized mentorship panel: Pitch Please: The Mistakes Creators Make in Their Pitches and How to Fix Them. This session is designed to teach creators how to refine brand outreach, construct compelling media kits, and establish lasting relationships with journalists.

Will Any New Gadgets and Gear Be Showcased?

For creators looking to upgrade their production setups, the VidCon expo floor features prominent exhibitors ranging from cinema-grade camera manufacturer Blackmagic Design to consumer brand Bandai. According to CNET’s marketing team, previous conventions have served as launchpads for hardware like Elgato’s streaming interfaces and advanced mobile microphones.

Ticket Pricing: Is VidCon Open to the Public?

VidCon is a ticketed event open to both industry professionals and the general public. Access passes are tiered by track, offering options for the Fan Track, Creator Track, and Industry Track (Pro Pass). Single day tickets start at $109.

Virtual Reality and Exclusive Fan Activities

This year’s convention also features the sold-out GorillaCon, the inaugural official live event dedicated to Gorilla Tag, the world’s most popular virtual reality social game. Gorilla Tag utilizes unique arm-based locomotion mechanics within virtual sandbox environments. While highly popular among younger demographics, older multiplayer gamers often compare its social structure to platforms like Rec Room.
