Identity management giant Okta agreed to acquire AI identity security startup Permiso Security on Thursday for an estimated $200 million to bolster defences against autonomous software threats as enterprises ramp up machine-identity deployment.
Inside the $200 Million Cash Deal
While the identity management specialist did not officially disclose the financial terms of the transaction, sources familiar with the matter revealed the acquisition is valued at just under $200 million. The transaction is structured as an almost all-cash deal. When asked for comment, an Okta spokesperson did not dispute the $200 million figure, though the company declined to comment on the specific terms of the agreement.
According to Okta, the acquisition is projected to close in the third quarter of its fiscal year 2027, subject to customary closing conditions.
Securing the Rise of Autonomous AI Agents
This strategic acquisition highlights a broader shift in the cybersecurity landscape. Identity management providers are moving beyond basic login verification to continuously monitor what users, applications, and AI agents do once they are inside a network. This shift has intensified competition to secure non-human and machine identities as businesses integrate AI deeper into their daily operations.
Permiso’s Rapid Rise and Tech Arsenal
Permiso emerged from stealth in 2022, developing software designed to help security teams detect suspicious activity in cloud environments after access has been granted. More recently, the startup expanded its capabilities to monitor AI agents and other machine identities.
From Stealth to SandyClaw
Co-founded by former FireEye executives Paul Nguyen and Jason Martin, Permiso specialises in identifying attacks that use compromised or stolen credentials to move laterally through cloud infrastructure. In April, the startup also introduced SandyClaw, a specialized platform built to analyse AI agent skills within a sandboxed environment to detect malicious behaviour before deployment.
Funding and Valuation Leap
Prior to the acquisition, Permiso had raised approximately $29 million in funding. This included an $18.5 million Series A round in April 2024 led by Altimeter Capital. Sources close to that round indicated it valued the Palo Alto-based startup at roughly $80 million on a post-money basis.
Integrating Advanced Threat Detection
The acquisition directly strengthens Okta’s capabilities in securing AI agents and non-human identities, complementing its core identity management offerings.
“Permiso will extend Okta’s identity security fabric with proven identity threat detection and response capabilities, and an incredible threat research and security team that will advance Okta’s threat detection and prevention capabilities,” said Ely Kahn, Okta’s Chief Product Officer, in a prepared statement.
