If you purchased your tickets before Wednesday, May 28, you are exempt from the new baggage fees for those specific flights. However, any bookings made on or after this date under the Basic, Wanna Get Away Plus, and Anytime fare classes will be subject to the new pricing structure.

The decision to charge for luggage coincides with a broader restructuring of Southwest’s fare system. The budget carrier announced the change in early March, alongside the rollout of a new basic economy tier that strips away several traditional customer perks.

On a positive note for consumer accessibility, travelers can now search and purchase Southwest tickets directly on Expedia, which integrated the airline’s inventory in February.
