Zero Tolerance for Machine-Made Art

The world’s premier pop culture convention is drawing a hard line against generative technology. According to the newly updated Rules published on the official Comic-Con website, AI-assisted creations will no longer be tolerated in any capacity during the exhibition.

The updated policy states: “Material created by Artificial Intelligence (AI) either partially or wholly, is not allowed in the art show. If there are questions, the Art Show Coordinator will be the sole judge of acceptability.” Representatives for San Diego Comic-Con did not immediately provide further comment on the decision.

This decision marks a major shift in policy. Previously, the convention permitted the display of AI-generated art, provided creators labeled it appropriately and refrained from selling it. However, following sustained advocacy and pushback from the creative community, as detailed in a report by 404 Media, organizers opted for a total ban. The event remains a global cornerstone for comic books, cinema, television, gaming, and cosplay.

Industry Insiders Rally Behind the Ban

Jim Zub, a prominent comic book writer known for his work on Conan the Barbarian and Dungeons & Dragons, expressed strong support for the policy update, urging other entertainment conventions to adopt similar restrictions.

“Hundreds of thousands of people attend San Diego Comic-Con each year, and the excitement that generates isn’t because they’re eager to meet a computer spitting out homogenized slop,” Zub stated. The writer and artist is currently confirmed to appear at the 2026 convention.

The Broader Battle Over AI in Entertainment

The integration of generative artificial intelligence has sparked intense debate across creative industries as software becomes increasingly adept at replicating human styles.

Hollywood’s Ongoing Conflict

In film and television, AI remains a highly contentious issue. It served as a core grievance during the 2023 Hollywood actors’ strike, with performers and special effects artists viewing the technology as an existential threat to their livelihoods. Conversely, several major studios view AI as a viable tool to streamline production budgets.

Netflix, for instance, integrated AI-generated imagery into the production of its Argentine sci-fi series El Eternauta. During a 2025 earnings call, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos defended the move, stating, “We remain convinced that AI represents an incredible opportunity to help creators make films and series better, not just cheaper.”

Gaming Industry Backlash

The video game sector has faced similar friction, where audiences frequently reject titles found utilizing generative AI. Recently, the Indie Game Awards revoked two nominations for the highly anticipated RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 after discovering that placeholder AI assets were present at launch. The developers promptly removed the controversial assets via a software patch.

While Hollywood and the gaming industry continue to navigate these technological shifts with mixed approaches, San Diego Comic-Con has chosen to prioritize human authorship.

“Artists, writers, actors and other creatives gather and celebrate the popular arts in person because the people part of the equation is what matters most,” Zub stated.
